Jean-Marie Becker has passed away

It is with profound sorrow that we inform you of the death of Mr. Jean-Marie Becker, Professor Emeritus, who passed away on 27 October 2007 at the age of 71 after a long struggle against the fatal disease ALS. He was born in France on 11 November 1935.

Jean-Marie Becker started his career within the Swedish National Mapping Agency already in 1966. He studied levelling techniques and introduced motorised levelling in Sweden in the beginning of the 1970’s. He was later on head of the geodetic unit. In 1966 he was appointed Adjoint Professor at the Royal Institute of Technology.

Since the beginning of the 1980’s Jean-Marie Becker has participated in several international activities. He participated in a number of working groups within FIG and has also been FIG’s representative in standardisation work and in co-operation with other bodies. He was the chairman of FIG Commission 5 during 1998 – 2002 and was appointed to be honourable member in 2004.

He was also the Swedish representative in CLGE during several years and active in a number of international R&D projects.

We will remember Jean-Marie for his knowledge and also for his lively engagement and unflagging interest to participate in debates aiming to get a clear picture of the issues being brought up for discussion.
