Young Surveyors Network

Purpose of the Young Surveyors Network

  • To improve the number of young professionals participating within the FIG.
  • To help young professionals in the beginning of their careers with contacts.
  • To increase co-operation between the commissions and the students and young professionals network.

The target groups of this working group are Master- and PhD Students, young professionals and commission delegates.

In a time where many of the member organizations are facing difficulties to attract young people to the profession of surveying this working group have been created. The goal is to create connections between “older” and “younger” surveyors.

2012 FIG Foundation Young Surveyor Conference Fellowships

The 2012 FIG Working Week to be held in Rome, Italy, will be the first FIG Working Week to host an additional Young Surveyors Conference immediately prior to the main Working Week events. The FIG Young Surveyors Conference will be held on the 4-5 May 2012, hosted by the National Council of Italian Surveyors, whist the full Working Week will run from 6 – 10 May. The aim of the additional young surveyor sessions will be to further the network of young surveyors internationally, to introduce young surveyors to the wider Working Week, and to learn more of the young surveyor vision for the future of the FIG.

FIG Foundation has decided to cover up to four (4) Fellowships, to cover the costs of travel, accommodation during the FIG Young Surveyors Conference and FIG Working Week and conference registration. Fellowships include attendance at the FIG Foundation Dinner, the FIG Gala Dinner and Commission dinner.

The 2012 FIG Foundation Young Surveyor Conference Fellowships will provide funding for individuals to cover the costs to attend and participate in the 2012 FIG Working Week in Rome, including attendance at the FIG Young Surveyor Conference.

Deadline for applications: 1 December 2011 (extended deadline)

Background

The FIG Young Surveyors Network was established as Commission 1 Working Group 1.2 Young Surveyors at the FIG Congress in Munich in 2006.

The reason that this working group was started in the first place was to bring more young surveyors into the network in FIG and because of the age structure within the surveying community in the western world.

Rome was not built in one day and neither was this working group. But since 2006 we have come quite a long way and in 2009 the working group was upgraded to a Young Surveyors Network in Eilat, Israel. In the creation of the Young Surveyors Network within FIG a lot of experience and input has been gathered throughout the four year period that has passed since 2006.

A global network

We are on the way to create a global network, and we are sure that there are many young surveyors thorughout the world who want to take part in this network.

In the Western World the average age of a surveyor is quite high, e. g. USA 57 years. It is about the same in large parts of Europe. This is a great problem as there are not enough new surveyors to fill up the gap that will come out of the upcoming retirements. Can something be done about this, and what can be done? Is this a global problem or specific fore some parts of the world? My impression so far is that young surveyors are keen to get involved but the older generation doubt this, could it just be miscommunication? But we wonder how many of the doubters have ever tried to get a young surveyor involved on a national level? We believe that this is a key element to keep young people involved within the national organizations.

Starting this network one of our key topics has been networking and getting to know more people in order to extend our personal network as well as the network of people who want to get involved. And looking on where we have gotten so far, this is a pretty strong motivation of the people that are involved. The world is shrinking with new communication tools made available, and we feel connected to the people in our group despite the distances both spatially and culturally. Skype, chats, various social media groups on the internet and of course emails have made it possible for all of us to keep a daily contact. We hope to share some of these experiences when it comes to communication. There is so much that can be done with so little.
