Stepping into the world of cadastre

Mr. Habtemicael Weldegiorgis, Eritrea, received the FIG Foundation Scholarship Award to present his paper The Cadastral System in Eritrea: Practice, Constraints, and Prospects at the Working Week 2009 in Eilat, Israel. “The opportunity of participating at a FIG Conference was an eye-opener and changed my world. The contacts opened new doors for me. I was exposed to world class experts where valuable experiences and best practices were learnt. The interactions with such an august body of experts enabled me to initiate revisions into the arbitrary service charge regime… and ensuring modernisation and self-sustainability of the Eritrean Cadastral Office.”

How the FIG Scholarship Helped Achieve my PhD degree and Educational Career

Mr. Bruno Lot Tanko awarded the 2018 FIG Foundation PhD scholarship for my research project: roadmap for implementing value management in the Nigerian Construction Industry. "I was extremely happy because I knew I had to focus on my research instead of thinking about how to repay my loans. Apart from my research, this scholarship was used to pay part of my tuition. The FIG Foundation scholarship made me to have more time for studying and learning which led to the completion of my PhD programme within three years.  Earning this prestigious scholarship also made me stand out and become an attractive job candidate as I immediately secured a job with the University of Reading UK (Malaysia campus), helping me to accomplish my dream."

About

The FIG Education Foundation was established in 1996 as a public company under the Corporation Laws of Australia. In 2000 the administration of the FIG Education Foundation was transferred to the FIG permanent office in Copenhagen. The General Assembly of FIG adopted the new Statutes for the FIG Foundation at its meeting in Seoul 11 May 2001. At the same time the original FIG Education Foundation was closed and the new FIG Foundation officially opened under the FIG umbrella.

The purpose of the Foundation is the funding of educational and capacity building projects and scholarships. For the over 100 years of its existence FIG has experienced a shortage of funds to finance education projects, even though education is vital to the surveying profession and is relevant to all the organisational members of FIG.

The FIG Foundation raises funds to secure a sustainable future for surveyors. Donations finance educational and capacity building projects and scholarships, especially in developing countries and countries in transition, and encourage research into all disciplines of surveying and help disseminate the results of that research.

Together with FIG Foundation you can secure building a sustainable future:

  • With grants and scholarships for projects, for instance to develop curricula for surveying education, training and capacity building, especially in developing countries
  • By encouraging research in all disciplines of surveying and disseminating the results of that research
  • By promoting high standards of education and training for surveyors and facilitating continuing professional development
  • By educating people in the disciplines of surveying, particularly in developing countries and countries in transition
  • By promoting the use of distance learning, networking, eLearning and knowledge management of surveying education and continuing professional development
  • By promoting the exchange of surveying personnel for greater understanding of all facets of the surveying profession
  • By seed funding conferences, meetings of young surveyors and similar events in cooperation with international agencies such as the United Nations.

Grants, Scholarships, and more...

The FIG Foundation proudly supports:

  • Participation of several Young Surveyors at the FIG Working Week/Congress
