Recipient of the PhD Scholarship 2021 finished PhD

Dogus Guler, Recipient of the PhD Scholarship 2021, finished his PhD at the Geomatics Engineering Department of Instanbul Technical University, Türkiye.

In August 2022 Dogus Guler finalized his PhD from the Geomatics Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University, Türkiye. He was awarded the PhD Scholarship, provided by the FIG Foundation, which he used for a research visit to Delft University of Technology. After submitting a Peer Review Paper for the FIG Congress 2022 in Warsaw, the scholarship was extended with a grant to attend Congress where Dogus Guler presented his research results.

I would like to start by thanking the FIG Foundation for awarding me the precious PhD Scholarship in 2021.

My name is Dogus Guler and I have bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Geomatics Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University, Türkiye. In August 2022, I completed my PhD in the same department under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tahsin Yomralioglu.

I have been working as a research & teaching assistant in the department for almost five years. My PhD topic is mainly related to the tripartite cycle aiming to enable the digital building permit issuing, updating the three-dimensional (3D) city database, and 3D registration of ownership rights in the multi-layered buildings through the efficient reuse of the digital data belonging to the buildings. In the context of the tripartite cycle, it is proposed to use the Building Information Modeling (BIM)-based models of the buildings as the digital data since BIM enables to model digitally the buildings by providing a wide range of both physical objects and enriched semantics. It is important to note that the usage of BIM is gaining growing interest in various industries and sectors such as Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) and land administration. As mentioned, one part of the proposed cycle contains the Dogus  of condominium rights by benefiting from as-built BIM models (BIMs) of the buildings that are obtained after the occupancy permit process. This is a highly important and timely topic because the use of two-dimensional (2D) data might be insufficient to unambiguously delineate the ownership rights with their physical counterparts in the complex buildings in the built environment. This part specifically focuses on the combination of two International Standardization Organization (ISO) standards namely Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and the Land Administration Domain Model (LADM).

Thanks to the scholarship, I had a chance to do a short research visit on the mentioned part at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and work with Prof. Dr. Peter van Oosterom. I would like to also thank the professor for having me as a visitor and for the fruitful discussions. Within the research visit, the model that extends the IFC schema by referencing LADM is provided with the aim of representing the condominium rights as 3D in Türkiye. The applicability of this model is demonstrated in terms of different cases regarding the condominium rights in the buildings through a BIM/IFC model of a building. The provided model and demonstrations in the research are expected to contribute to both efficient 3D Land Administration System (LAS) transition and increasing interrelation between the AEC industry and land administration sectors in Türkiye for mutual benefit.

As a result of the research visit, we jointly published a journal paper in Geocarto International and a conference paper presented at the FIG Congress 2022. I had also a chance to present our peer-reviewed paper at the FIG Congress 2022 thanks to the additional fund within the scholarship. It was a great experience as we exchanged ideas with many colleagues. All publications where the scholarship is acknowledged can be seen below. Lastly, I would like to state that this scholarship provided great motivation for both my doctoral studies and further research.
