Vice-President Stig Enemark participated in the 38th National Congress of the French Géométres-Experts in Saint-Malo 14-16 June 2006. The congress was very well attended with about 500 French surveyors plus a range of international participants especially from Francophone world. The Congress was headed by Mr. Alain Gaudet, President of the Ordre des Géometres-Experts.

The key focus was on the European planning systems to discuss whether there was a need for introducing a more market led approach to spatial planning and land administration in France. A panorama of the European planning systems was presented by:

  • Stig Enemark, Denmark
  • Sebastian Loew, UK
  • Joesep Maria Llop Torne, Spain
  • Henk Ullenbroek, the Netherlands
  • Jean-Paul Miserez, Switzerland.

The general lessons learnt from the European countries were analyzed by Prof. Vincent Renard, and the role of the licensed surveyors and their possible response were discussed. Discussions of course also went on during lunches and dinners presenting the best of the French cuisine.

I connection to the Congress there was a meeting of Francophone Group of Surveyors that was established at the meeting in Rabat, Morocco, November 2005, see http://www.fig.net/news/news_2005/rabat_november_2005.htm. A number of Arab representatives participated in this meeting including Yaacoub Saade, Chair Elect of FIG Commission1, and Dr. Sarkis Fadous, President of AUS. It was decided to organize a first Francophone Surveyors Congress to be held in Quebec, Canada, 2-5 October 2007, and to be organised by Mr. Daniel Roberge, Canada, see www.quebec2007.ca. FIG will co-sponsor this event.
