FIG President at XIX International Geodetic Students Meeting
(IGSM)

According to the simple truth that the Geodetic Students across the world
are also the future of FIG, Prof. Magel has followed the invitation
of IGSO and XIX IGSM-organisers to give a keynote speech “About FIG’s and
Surveyors Contributions to Building a better world” at the final plenary
session on Friday, 30 June in Cracow. Although there was the exciting
football match Germany vs. Argentina, more than 100 students from about 15
countries (even from the Australian University of Melbourne) listened to the
speeches of FIG President and the welcome greetings of the Polish FIG member
association, Prof. Kazimierz Czarnecki. Although they have shown
great interest and have been already registered, the students from Ghana (UMaT
and KNUST) and Ukraine (Lviv Polytechnic) unfortunately finally could not
come. Once again it was a matter of financing.
More than ever it seems necessary that the national associations should
support their next generation of leaders in their profession. In his speech
(www.fig.net) FIG President Magel
encouraged the students to become more interested and involved in
socio-political and even ethical aspects than only to remain in technical
silos! Once again, Magel argued to aim at the goal to become a
“well-grounded specialized generalist” and quoted Spanish writer and
philosopher Ortega y Gasset who once has said: “To be a good
technician it is not enough to be a good technician only!” President
Magel has also explained the advantages of FIG which can help to strengthen
or improve education systems in the different member countries. Magel: “Use
the great chances of FIG network and commissions’ activities to become
better informed than others and to ask especially for broader education and
curricula at your home universities!”
Finally, Magel requested the students to actively participate the FIG
Congress 2006 in Munich thus demonstrating the big FIG community of
professionals and students. International Geodetic Students Organisation (IGSO)
Secretary General Roman Pieczka from the hosting Cracow University of
Science and Technology (AGH-UST) requested FIG President to clarify which
formal or informal status IGSM could get within FIG organisation. Magel, who
at the banquette evening with wonderfully dressed, singing and dancing young
female and male students has awarded Roman Pieczka with the FIG President’s
globe, promised to bring this request to the FIG Council and the General
Assembly. Polish President Czarnecki has shown his great interest to support
this request. He even has expressed his concern, that hopefully this great
openness of FIG against the students will remain in future as well.
FIG is already invited to come to the next IGSM 2007, which will take
place in Sofia, Bulgaria (www.igso.org).
