JB GIS ad hoc Committee on Capacity Building in Africa

Latest news

The Joint Board of Geospatial Information Societies (JBGIS) comprising ISPRS, FIG, ICA, IAG, IHO, ISCGM and IMTA, has set up a committee to advise the Board on capacity building activities in Africa.

The mission of the committee is: "To co-ordinate the capacity building activities in Africa of the members of the Joint Board and to advise the Joint Board on policy issues relating to education in Africa."

As part of our activities we have compiled a list of capacity building organisations in Africa. I will be very pleased to receive any comments on, or corrections to, this list. We are also planning to compile a list of universities concerned with Geospatial Information in Africa, and a list of activities. Although for the latter I hope that we can build on the newsletters from GSDI, EIS Africa and UN OOSA.

The Joint Board met in Vienna on 11th July and decided to push forward our initiatives on capacity building in Africa and to look for collaboration with organisations such as ITC and the UN Economic Commission for Africa. We will be organizing a session on Capacity Building at the Map World Forum [GE1]in Hyderabad in January 2007.
