The Bathurst Workshop

A major international conference in Melbourne in October will launch the joint United Nations-International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) Declaration on land tenure and land administration reform for sustainable development, to be known as the Bathurst Declaration.

It is nearly three decades since the Stockhom Declaration and seven years since the UN facilitated Agenda 21. Yet many nations are still far from achieving an effective strategy for sustainable development. There is an imperative for moving more strongly to fundamental institutional, legal and technological reforms. The information technology revolution that could be a vital tool towards the achievement of sustainable development remains largely untapped for that purpose. Appropriate land management and administration infrastructures are crucial to harnessing that and other resources to fulfil the sustainable development vision. Forty international experts from twenty-five countries, five UN agencies and the World Bank will debate those very issues and distil a fresh vision and strategy at a week-long residential workshop at Bathurst NSW in mid-October 1999 to produce the Bathurst Declaration.
