The FIG Foundation - Building a Sustainable Future

The FIG Foundation will build a sustainable future
by:
- giving grants and scholarships to support curricula
development and capacity building, especially in developing
countries
- promoting high standards of surveying education and
facilitating CPD (Continuous Professional Development)
activities
- promoting virtual academies and the use of distance learning
in surveying education
- encouraging research activities and the dissemination of
research results
- promoting the exchange of young surveying personnel supporting
conferences and other events by seed funding in co-operation
with international agencies such as the United Nations.

The FIG Foundation - what is it?
The FIG Foundation is an independent body under the International
Federation of Surveyors.
- The Foundation has been established for the purpose of raising funds
to finance surveying education
development projects and supporting young surveyors in order to build
a sustainable future.
- The Foundation aims to raise a fund of 1 million US dollars in the
coming years. This will allow activities to be funded by using the
annual interest. The Foundation may use 50 per cent of its
annual income for supporting its aims.
- The Foundation funds shall not be used to support the normal
activities of FIG.
- The Foundation is administered by the FIG Office in Copenhagen and
directed by a Board of five Directors appointed by the FIG Council.
- The Directors of the Foundation will announce every year the
scholarships and grants available.
- The Directors will also announce the distribution of funds and
promote the results of supported projects.
Applications for a grant from the FIG
Foundation in 2008
The Board of Directors has announced the
grants from The FIG Foundation for 2008. Applications shall be submitted
to the FIG Foundation at the FIG Office by 15 May 2008. The FIG
Foundation offers total grants up to 20,000 € in 2008.

and in .doc-format.
When preparing your application please consider the
objects for which the Foundation is established. These are:

To give grants and scholarships to projects, for
instance to develop curricula for surveying education, training and
capacity building, especially in developing countries;

To encourage research into all disciplines of
surveying and to disseminate the results of that research;

To promote high standards of education and training
for surveyors and to facilitate continuing professional development;

To educate people in the disciplines of surveying,
particularly in developing countries and countries in transition;
-
To promote the use of distance learning, networking ,
eLearning and knowledge management if surveying education and
continuing professional development;

To promote the exchange of surveying personnel for
greater understanding of all facets of the profession of surveying;
-
To support by seed funding conferences, meetings of
young surveyors and similar events in co-operation with
international agencies such as the United Nations.
FIG Foundation Grants in 2007
The FIG Foundation received this year twelve applications. The Board of Directors
decided to give three grants. The size of the grant vary according to the
project. The grants were admitted to following projects:
- Sara J Wilkinson and Richard Reed (Australia):
Student Perceptions of Professional Surveying Bodies (3,000 EUR)
- Ganesh Prasad Bhatta (Nepal): Cadastral
Surveying 'For the People, By the People':Developing a Participatory
Model for Cadastral Resurveying in Nepal (2,750 EUR)
- Dev Raj Paudyal (India): Low cost pro-poor land management
techniques in developing countries: A case study in Nepal and India
(2,000 EUR).
A special Foundation Grant was
given to support young surveyors attendance to the Young Surveyors
Workshop in Cairo in November 2008.
Deadline for applications for FIG grants in 2008 is
15 May 2008.
FIG Foundation Grants in 2006
The FIG Foundation received this year nine applications. The Board of Directors
decided to give three grants at its meeting during the FIG
Congress in Munich. Each of these grants is 2,000 EUR. The grants were admitted to following projects:
- Parama Anandan (India): Educating Voluntary
Organizations in Disciplines of Surveying in Various Districts of
Tamilnadu
- Catherine Kariuki (Kenya): The Impact of
HIV/AIDS on Land Values and the Women's Property Rights in the Context
of HIV/AIDS
- Ganesh Prasad Bhatta (Nepal): Institutional
and Legal Aspects in Land Disputes: the Context of Nepalese Cadastral
Surveying

FIG Foundation managed to raise almost US$ 50,000
during the FIG XXII Congress in Washington, DC in April 2002. The
biggest donation US$ 25,000 was given by Mr. Jack Dangermond,
President and Founder of ESRI. The other donations including
individual and corporate donations and the first FIG Foundation
matched Mr. Dangermond's donation. Here Jack
Dangermond (on the right) receives the first Platinum Plaque of the
FIG Foundation from Professor Holger Magel, President of the
Foundation. The other plaques for the founding members of the
Foundation were given to Mary
Clawson, Congress Director FIG 2002 (Silver Plaque) and Trimble Navigation
(Bronze Plaque) and Mr John
Hohol (Bronze Plaque). |
Mr. Dangermond,
Honorary Chairman of the FIG Foundation, also launched the ESRI FIG
Grants at the Congress. The grant includes 25 software packages to
universities. The first grants and scholarships from the FIG
Foundation will be given by the end of 2002. |

The Board of Directors of the FIG Foundation decided on the FIG Grants
2005 at its meeting in Cairo during the FIG Working Week 2005. About
7,000 € was given to 7 applicants from 6 countries. The total number of
applications was 14. The grants were given to the following applicants:

Education of NGOs in the coastal districts of Tamilnadu on the surveying
education after the tsunami
- Hasanuddin Zainal Abidin, Indonesia
Studying land subsidence of Bandung Basin (Indonesia) using GPS survey
technique

Promoting surveying education in Colombia by awarding best Colombian
paper published during the year
- Ganesh Prasad, Nepal
Identification of technical deficiencies and human factors in land
disputes: In the context of Nepalese cadastral surveying
- Karin Viergever, United Kingdom
Promoting the understanding and value of new developments in remote
sensing and global navigation satellite systems for interdisciplinary
professional groups in a developing country
- Mia Flores-Bórquez, United Kingdom
Land disputes resolution and restitution in post-conflict societies
- Emmanuel Tembo, Botswana
Growing a profession – a comparative study of Southern African
professional bodies
The Board of Directors of the FIG Foundation decided on the FIG Grants
2004 at its meeting in Athens during the FIG Working Week 2004. About
6,000 € was given to 4 applicants from 4 countries. The total number of
applications was 12. The grants were given to the following applicants:

Managing Land Information for Urban Governance in Botswana
- Jennifer Whittal, South Africa
Capacity Building and Postgraduate Research in Land Tenure and Cadastral
Systems in Southern Africa

Increasing the Range of Services of the Colombian Surveyors by
Demonstrating DISCUSS, a Decision Support System that Uses Latest
Surveying Technologies
- Jose David Belaga, Argentina
The Argentine Cadastre over the Last Fifty Years and an Overview of the
Brazilian Cadastre
In addition two project proposals need further clarification.
The Board of Directors further reserved 500 € for the International
Geodetics Students Meeting to be held in Istanbul in 2005 under the
condition that the local member association of FIG matches the same
amount.
The Board of Directors of
the FIG
Foundation decided on the FIG Grants 2003 at its meeting in Paris
during the FIG Working Week and 125th Anniversary. Almost US$ 7,000 was
given to 7 applicants from 7 countries. The total number of applications was
15. The grants were
given to the following applicants:
Juan B. Paez-Ferro (Colombia): Development of an actualization
course in order to prepare the academic infrastructure in Colombian
universities for the new technologies in the surveying profession; Nick
Nunnington (Netherlands): The European Challenge - an Overview;
Renida Sarala (India): Survey orientation programme; Marina
Vaskovich (Sweden): Property formation modelling with application of
the Republic of Belarus; Andrew Kozikov (Ukraine): Cadastral
Development - the contribution of scientific enquiry; and the
International Geodetic Students Meetings 2003 in Germany and in 2004 in
Finland under the condition that the local member association of FIG
matches the same amount.
FIG Foundation grants in 2002
The Board of Directors of
the FIG
Foundation has decided on the FIG Grants 2002 at its meeting 19
December 2002. Totally US$ 13,000 were given to 12 applicants from 10
countries. The total number of applications was 20. The grants were
given to the following applicants:
Dr. Frances Plimmer (United Kingdom), Boipuso Nkwae
(Canada/Botswana), Mabel Alvarez de Lopez (Argentina), Dra. Analía
Argerich (Argentina), Dr. Ioan Stancu (Romania), PhD Hande Demirel
(Turkey), Alick R. Mwanza (Zambia), Sara J. Wilkinson (United Kingdom),
Dr. Sankaran Rajendran (India), Marie C. Robidoux (Canada), Dr.
Galcano
Canny Mulaku (Kenya) and Dr. Jinyun Guo (P. R. China).
The FIG Foundation - How can I contribute?
Companies, associations, institutions, events, surveyors’ groups and
individuals may contribute to the Foundation by:
- Donations which will be recognised by a plaque or a certificate of
different categories reflecting the sum of donation as follows:.
- platinum plaque US$ 25,000
- gold plaque US$ 10,000
- silver plaque US$ 5,000
- bronze plaque US$ 1,000
- All contributors will also be recognised in the FIG Annual Review.
- Donations to support specific projects or by offering scholarships.
Donors and Benefactors may use the FIG Foundation logo to promote
their project donations or scholarships.
- Voluntary donation when registering to FIG events.
- Attending social functions such as the FIG Foundation Dinners held
during every FIG Congress and Working Week and other events.
History of the FIG Foundation
The FIG Education Foundation was established in 1996 as a public
company under the Corporation Laws of Australia. In 2000 the
administration of the FIG Education Foundation was transferred to the
FIG permanent office in Copenhagen. The General Assembly of FIG adopted
the new Statutes for the FIG Foundation at its meeting in Seoul 11 May
2001. At the same time the original FIG Education Foundation was closed
and the new FIG Foundation officially opened under the FIG umbrella.
The purpose of the Foundation is the funding of educational and
capacity building projects and scholarships. For the over 100 years of its existence FIG has experienced a
shortage of funds to finance education projects, even though education is
vital to the surveying profession and is relevant to all the
organisational members of FIG.
Specifically, the objects for which the Foundation is established are:
- To give grants and scholarships to projects, for instance to develop
curricula for surveying education and capacity building, especially in
developing countries;
- To promote high standards of education and training for surveyors
and to facilitate continuing professional development;
- To educate people in the disciplines of surveying, particularly in
developing countries and countries in transition;
- To promote virtual academies and the use of distance learning in
surveying education;
