Social Events

The social programme includes a Welcome Reception at the Stockholm City Hall, the FIG Foundation dinner at the Vasa Museum, visits to homes of Swedish colleagues in the Stockholm region and the Gala Dinner at the Grand Hotel.

Welcome Reception at the Stockholm City Hall

Stockholm City invites the delegates to a Welcome Reception
at the famous Stockholm City Hall with a buffet and guided tours. The Nobel Prize Banquet is one of many events in this building, which is one of Stockholm’s most fascinating, impressive and aesthetically pleasing attractions.
This reception is hosted by Mr. Bo Bladholm, Lord Mayor of Stockholm

FIG Foundation Dinner at the Vasa Museum
Monday 16 June 2008 - 19:00-22:30
FIG Foundation Dinner will be organised at the Vasa Museum. Conference participants have the opportunity to take part in a private visit to this award-winning museum, which hosts the famous battleship Vasa, that sank 1628 on its maiden voyage. It was raised from the depths of Stockholm harbour in 1961 where she had lain for 333 years. Now fully restored, the royal flagship is a never to be forgotten experience. Guided tours in the museum and a buffet.

Home Visit to Swedish Surveyors

On Tuesday evening you have the opportunity to visit the homes of Swedish surveyors living in the Stockholm region over a dinner and get to know Swedish and international colleagues in a more relaxed atmosphere. Name and address of your host will be given when you register to the conference at the conference centre.

Gala Dinner at the Grand Hotel - Winter Garden
Wednesday 18 June - 19:00-24:00
Click picture for bigger format. The Gala Dinner will take place at the Grand Hotel, which is the most well-known hotel in Stockholm. The hotel opened for the first time in 1874 and has a long and fascinating history. The rooms and interiors are unique, as is the hotel’s location in the centre of Stockholm next to the water and with a view to the Royal Palace. Vinterträdgården, the “Winter Garden”, is a magnificent indoor space that was opened in 1909.

Technical Tours

Technical tours will include a waterfront city planning tour by boat in the city archipelago of Stockholm to watch old and new housing projects. Technical tours will also be organised to the National Land Survey and Swedesurvey in Gävle and to the City Planning Administration of Stockholm where city surveying and cadastral services are carried out. Furthermore The Swedish Maritime Administration will offer an interesting technical tour to one of their centres for vessel traffic service (VTS) and Trimble AB in Danderyd will show you their advanced survey systems.

Trimble AB in Danderyd

Study visit to Trimble AB in Danderyd (20 km north of Stockholm).
Trimble AB, a part of the global Trimble corporation, develops and manufactures advanced survey systems used e.g. in land surveying, mapping, construction survey as well as for positioning of heavy construction and agricultural machinery. Trimble AB pioneered the development of electronic distance measurement 60 years ago. Some short presentations, an interesting guided tour in the assembly area.

Social programme and sightseeing tours

A number of special tours will be organized for the conference. For each tour a minimum of participants is required. Some highlights are listed here:

City Walk in the Old Town 16, 17 18 and 19 June at 14.00 from Conference centre

You will explore the centre of Stockholm and especially the Old Town on foot. The experienced guide will give you all kind of interesting information about the places you pass, such as the Concert hall, the Opera House, the residence of the Swedish Prime Minister, and the Royal Castle. The Old Town is the well-preserved area where the history of Stockholm once started and the guide will take you through the narrow streets and lively squares. We will hear about the life in these quarters from the 13th century until our present days. Our guide will take you through Stortorget (Main Square), and will tell you about the Stockholm blood bath of 1520, as well as recounting the legend of St. George and the Dragon. After this we will stroll through the courtyards and lanes of the city’s oldest section, sights which many visitors normally miss.

You will cruise on the calm Lake Mälaren in a very old steamship. On board you will enjoy delicious food in the restaurant, arriving at Drottningholm Palace, you will be welcomed by strong cultural Swedish history. The majestic garden, the Royal Palace, and the Theatre from the 17th century are works of art themselves. Guided tour both inside the castle and the theatre buildings. Drottningholm is one of the Swedish contributions to the World Heritage List and the home of the royal family.

City sightseeing and a visit to Skansen Open-air Museum  Wednesday the 18th of June at 10.00 from Conference centre

Skansen is the oldest open-air museum in the world. Skansen is also a zoological park with e.g. bears and wolves. It is located on the island of Djurgården, a royal park near the centre of Stockholm. Over the years about 150 historical buildings have been moved here from nearly every part of Sweden. Most of them date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors to the houses and farmsteads are met by historical interpreters in period costume.
Start with a guided city-sightseeing by bus in central Stockholm. When arriving to Skansen there will be a guided tour by foot for 1,5 h.

More to see In addition to the organised tours it is easy to see Stockholm and the surroundings on your own. There are city-sightseeing tours by bus leaving from different places near the conference venue and a wide variety of alternatives to get acquainted with the city from the water.

You can also take a trip to the famous archipelago with thousands of islands. There are still several steamships in operation, the largest fleet of passenger steamships in the world. Tours of varying length and content are available.

There are a lot of museums placed in the city centre and you can visit many of them free of charge with the Stockholm Card. The card includes among other things free travel by metro, bus and commuter train. We will be happy to help you with information and cards can be purchased from the conference venue.
